I'm Australian, so the above is a starmap of Sydney, NSW. Because of Earth's curve, my night sky might look very different to yours!
I struggle to identify constellations, but I know Scorpius, which is the constellation I was born under in the Western Zodiac.
I get very emotional about constellations sometimes. Humanity is desperate to find life in the stars: gods, aliens, stars that govern our life. Please don't let us be the only ones. Please don't let us be alone.
Did you know that in this lonely search, we've even sent a record into space? It's called the Golden Record. It was launched on the Voyager 1 and 2 in 1977. It contains the best of humanity. Our laughs, our languages, our music. Johnny B. Goode is on there. There's even directions to Earth, if they ever want to visit. Whether an alien lifeform would be able to decode or correctly interpret our message is debatable. They may not even find it, since we didn't have the technology to launch it very far. Yet I still find it touching. To quote Carl Sagan: "The spacecraft will be encountered and the record played only if there are advanced space-faring civilizations in interstellar space, but the launching of this 'bottle' into the cosmic 'ocean' says something very hopeful about life on this planet."
You can read more about the Golden Record here.
I hope there's life out there, I really do. I don't believe in astrology or any god, but I do believe in aliens. I hope they're looking down on me. Maybe they're just as desperate to find life, too. Or maybe they know we're out here, and they watch us with love.
"Look at that!" they might say. "Those lonely humans. I hope they visit soon. I'll leave a light on in the window for them, so they know we're home."
